Pharmacy Technician – Full-Time (Evenings)

- Weekend and holiday rotation required. On average, this includes 4 weekends per 8-week scheduling block and approximately 3 holidays per year

UPMC Hamot is seeking a dedicated Full-Time Pharmacy Technician to join our team. In this role, you will support the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care by assisting with medication preparation, distribution, and inventory management in a fast-paced hospital setting.
The Pharmacy Technician provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by assisting with sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, medication filling, and distribution activities. All services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
This role is essential to ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant medication use processes. The individual will support daily pharmacy operations, contribute to medication distribution and safety initiatives, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care.

Title and rate of pay will be based on education and experience. A $5,000 sign-on bonus is available to eligible candidates in exchange for a 2-year work commitment with UPMC.
Preferred:
- Prior hospital or health-system pharmacy experience
- Experience with automated dispensing cabinets (e.g., Omnicell)
- Familiarity with medication safety practices, inventory management, and regulatory standards
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Responsibilities:
Medication Preparation & Filling
- Assist in filling medication orders, including labeling, counting, stocking, and proper documentation
- Prepare oral and injectable medications, including IV admixtures and TPN, using proper techniques
- Work in sterile compounding areas, including preparation of hazardous medications (e.g., chemotherapy) using aseptic technique
Medication Distribution
- Support distribution of medications, including cassettes, crash carts, and controlled substances in accordance with policy and regulations
- Retrieve discontinued medications and return them to appropriate pharmacy areas, including processing credits if needed
- Maintain positive and professional service relationships during the distribution process
Inventory & Investigational Support
- Assist with procurement, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational or study medications
- Monitor and maintain inventory levels across pharmacy areas, including automated dispensing systems
General Duties
- Communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients, and visitors; refer clinical questions to pharmacists
- Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment
- Follow proper hand hygiene and safety practices
- Utilize computer systems to process and maintain patient and medication records
- Maintain required documentation (e.g., refrigerator logs, inventory logs, compliance records)
- Follow all applicable regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, and CMS requirements
- Support maintenance and restocking of automated dispensing machines, emergency boxes, and crash carts
Controlled Substances & Compliance
- Maintain accurate controlled substance records and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and departmental regulations
- Participate in audits and ensure proper storage and dispensing controls
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist in training pharmacy staff and students
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
